“Peace” :: Today’s Free Download

Today’s free download, “Peace“, is the title track from the PEACE album. It is an original composition for viola and piano. While you listen, reflect on these words:

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God”.  (Matthew 5:9)

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid”. (John 14:27)

“Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ ” (Romans 5:1)

“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you”. (Isaiah 26:3)

“Coventry Carol (The Lament)” from PEACE :: Today’s Free Download

It was a turbulent time in the history of Israel when Jesus was born. When King Herod learned of the birth of the “king of the Jews” from a group of traveling scholars (the wise men), he decided to massacre all the male children aged two and under in the region of Bethlehem. “Coventry Carol (The Lament)” describes this terrible infanticide. The lyrics of this haunting 16th Century Christmas Carol represent a mother’s lament for her doomed child:

Herod, the king, in his raging,
Charged he hath this day

His men of might, in his own sight,

All children young to slay.

That woe is me, poor Child for Thee!
And ever mourn and sigh,

For thy parting neither say nor sing,

Bye, bye, lully, lullay.

Here is the historical account in Matthew 2:16-18 (NIV):

16 When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. 17 Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:

18 “A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more.”

As I reflect on this, I can’t help but fast forward to another turbulent time in history when the same “king of the Jews” was crucified on a Cross. It was for this reason Jesus came … he was born into poverty (a stark contrast to the perfect Christmas cards give and receive), lived a life helping and serving others and then went to the Cross for us. “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, so that you through His poverty might become rich (2 Cor. 8:9)”.  This is today’s free download. Spend some time reflecting on what Jesus has done for you.

“In the Bleak Mid Winter” :: Today’s Free Download.

PEACE :: “In The Bleak Mid Winter” http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/trevordick5

This has got to be one of the most beautiful Christmas songs ever written (a favorite of mine) with a powerful message:

In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan,
Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone;
Snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow,
In the bleak midwinter, long ago.

Our God, Heaven cannot hold Him, nor earth sustain;
Heaven and earth shall flee away when He comes to reign.
In the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed
The Lord God Almighty, Jesus Christ.

What can I give Him, poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb;
If I were a Wise Man, I would do my part;
Yet what I can I give Him: give my heart.

May each of us give Him our hearts and lives. Have a fantastic “winter” day!

Trevor

This arrangement of “Angels” flows directly out of the title track, “Glory” on the GLORY Disc. Here is the 5th String Blvd. Band’s live rendition on 100 Huntley Street a couple of years back.
