Truly a historic day …

At 10:50 this morning, Le-Anne and I arrived at David and Muriel McGibbon’s (Le-Anne’s parents) south end Guelph condo to watch history in the making: the inauguration of the first African-American and 44th President of the United States – Barack Obama. It was a moving ceremony. There were a few moments in particular that struck me …

Pastor Rick Warren’s moving opening prayer (invocation).

The pure nervous humanity of Obama’s oath of office … botched by Chief Justice Roberts? You decide …

I loved the presence of the arts … the “first lady” of soul – Aretha Franklin; poet – Elizabeth Alexander; but especially the John Williams composition, “Air and Simple Gifts”, performed by Itzhak Perlman (violin), Yo-Yo Ma (cello), Garriela Montero (piano) and Anthony McGill (clarinet). It was during this beautiful performance that Obama actually became president … as the clock struck 12 noon.

This was the most watched event in history … and great to share it and celebrate it with my family. Until next time. TD

Random thoughts … happenings … observances

It feels like a little while since I made an entry here … a busy time of life, teaching and ministry right now …

So, last week I decided to swallow my pride and hire some help (Paul Briggs and his sister partner, Leslie) to finish off the drywalling in the basement studio entrance. Until then, I had been working on it on my own (with help from friends) in every spare minute … it has been good to let it go. Paul and Leslie are doing a great job. The flooring is ordered and Le-Anne and I chose the paint colours today … some rich earthy old-world hues which will look great. We plan to paint this weekend.

The last two weekends found me in Fredericton and St. John, NB and then Belleville, ON. Well over 100 children sponsored through Compassion which was really thrilling. A quick trip to Kingston after playing in Belleville found me visiting with my good friends Richard and Lorraine Cleaver in their beautiful new home.

Flying back to Toronto on a small Air Canada Jazz jet plane from Fredericton. The strong wind was blowing my instrument case up in the air …

Hmm …  I think Corey has me beat!

What a beautiful fall it has been! The colours were extra vibrant. I have thoroughly enjoyed each road trip as I have admired God’s incredible creation.

The entrance to our new home a couple of weeks back …

We had Lot’s of fun making cotton candy last week with a rented machine which we handed out to the children in our community on Halloween along with hot apple cider for the adults. It was a nice way to give something back to our new community. We really feel at home here.

Cotton Candy anyone? Make some … eat some … make some … eat some!

It sure was interesting to follow the American election over the last few weeks and watch Barack Obama’s incredible, historic win yesterday … “YES WE CAN!”

Until next time … TD
